Joe Buckley of Stewartville Missouri visits friends O H Ogden of Minear Illinois arrives for a family gathering near the city. Banks will close for Labor Day. Several residents return from the Des Moines State Fair and others arrive home from trips to Chicago Philadelphia and Brooklyn.
Des Moines report on Bill Coop and his two yoke of oxen as major attractions at the International Live Stock Exposition. Chicago dealers seek to hire Coop for Chicago winter shows, while Seattle appears distant. A two wheeled cart from Mexico, given to Jefferson County Historical Society, also features in the exhibit.
Des Moines reports the 55th Iowa State Fair drew about 225000 visitors and roughly 135000 dollars in receipts despite two rain ruined days. Officials praise exhibits and cooperative state college ties, noting premium payments and strong improvements across grounds.
Dr. McKenzie and family return from Cincinnati as Physical Director Joseph C. Picken visits Fairfield before Parsons College opens on Sept 14 to arrange new gym equipment. Shower baths are installed and tested as satisfactory. Students will find all training facilities ready in the new gymnasium.
Miss Minnie L Stuart of Fairfield and Mr William N Ball of Fairfield were married at the home of Mr and Mrs Joe Zear in Richland on September 1st at high noon Rev J C Caughlin officiated. A wedding dinner followed the ceremony. The bride is well known in Fairfield. the groom, a Fairfield native son of Mr Ball who served in the state legislature, is hoped to prove worthy of his bride. After a brief wedding trip the couple will likely reside in Fairfield.
Professor George F. Heffelbower of Wooster Ohio has been selected to fill the vacancy in Parsons College Greek department created by Dr J G McMuriry’s resignation. Heffelbower, a University of Michigan AB 1897 AM 1898 Fellow at Columbia, has taught at Carroll College Scio College and the University of Wooster and studied at Harvard Paris Halle and Leipsic.
Des Moines reports Old Settlers Day at the Iowa State Fair drew large crowds with a suffrage rally in the tent and speeches by notable figures including Senator Cummins and Governor Carroll. Attendance exceeded earlier days as boys’ judging offered multiple scholarships and cattle hogs and horses classes were judged.
The annual picnic of Mrs. W. P. Sullivans art club was held yesterday afternoon on the Sullivan home lawn on South Main street. Attendance was small due to members being out of town, but the informal gathering included socializing games contests and music. A picnic supper followed and was greatly enjoyed by all. Those absent missed a pleasant event.
Mrs J M McKain received word in Brighton of the death of Harry Savage Jr youngest son of Prof H H Savage a nephew of Mrs McKain Funeral is set for 2 p m today at Brighton cemetery to interment follows in the family plot
An instructive and entertaining lecture on Lew Wallace's Ben Hur will be given at the Presbyterian church on Saturday September 11 under the auspices of the church ladies. The Hon William Cullen Burns praised the simple story and the over 200 color views illustrating the tale. Tickets at 25 cents include a ten weeks Home Herald trial subscription.
