A fire discovered at 11 50 pm in the Iowa State Bank rooms caused about 600 damage to furniture and fittings. Firemen prevented total destruction with low air pressure and a quick response. several firemen inhaled smoke but recovered, while law offices on the second story were filled with smoke.
A new Old Soldier’s rifle and drum corps emerged with organizer P. Cary leading a group including George Mower EP Cary tenor drums James Messick L. Spencer bass drums J. Sipon and Willis Strong filers. They plan to march in the Old Settlers and Old Soldiers celebration Monday and Tuesday and aim to sustain a permanent band as a city addition to marching groups.
The seventh day Adventists tent meeting on Depot Street closed Saturday night after ongoing efforts since July seventh. Seven joined the church and three await baptism with many others interested. The tent moves to Adams and Detreets for meetings starting Thursday at 7 30 PM. All invited.
Atlantic City and Chicago report the death of John Jay Jackson famed for imprisoning leaders during the 1902 West Virginia miners strike. The 88 year old jurist, nicknamed the Iron Judge, retired in 1905 after forty four years on the bench and a career that polarized labor and courts.
The Old Settlers celebration plans to feature William E Coop and his oxen Rock and Pat. Coop, born July 1 1816 in Cedar township, is claimed as Jefferson county’s first white child and will lead Burlington events during the Barhant Home Coming week with his team.
Funeral services were held at noon for Richard Mansfield with Rev. Alfred Poole Grant of St James Episcopal church officiating. A funeral procession escorted the body to Gardner Cemetery across from the Mansfield home.
George Braum aged about 25 of Delaware township near Minden City Michigan shot himself in the head with a revolver and died. Neighbors say he had been acting strangely for weeks and authorities suspect temporary insanity at the time of the act.
Mrs Alva Workman and her daughter Esther have come home after a visit to Glasgow. Seats for My Friend from India will be on sale at Thoma's Thursday morning.
The annual reunion parade in Fairfield is set for Tuesday with a grand display on West Broadway and Main Street. The route loops through Court Street to the Public Square, around the square, then to the Public Library before returning to Court. Officials include Chief Marshal Loo Chester and several local groups, veterans, and bands. Memorial services and church tributes were held, honoring Old Soldiers and Settlers.
Thousands gathered in the city for Labor Day events with a welcome at the park. Chief Marshall Hoo S. J. Chester led the program while Atty A W Jagtes and S B Crape welcomed visitors. Reunions of native born from Ohio Illinois Pennsylvania Indiana and New York featured five prime meals and a parade followed by contests between Company M and Glasgow. Ralph Lamon accompanied Old Settlers to the new park near the water works for grounds inspection as business fronts wore patriotic decorations.
Miss Nell Sullivan of Davenport visited her father here yesterday. Wirth King returned home Sunday to spend a few days with his family.
Mrs Barbara Ela Canterbury died Saturday morning after weeks of illness from a stomach tumor. She was in the sick year of age and survived by several children. A resident of this city for years she was well known here. Funeral services were held from the home yesterday at three o clock conducted by Rev. Thom Os born.
Mra Henry Watters reported Nir morning after a rumor that her grandson Ver non Romine had a serious accident. He was alive but not expected to recover. Roscoe Powler suffers hay fever and is very poorly. Mrs Christine Johanson returned home after visiting in Hlinots with her nephew. Will Hedge plans a short visit with his father. Mrs OB Kroger and Wayne returned from Ottumwa after visiting relatives and attending the Barnum and Bailey circus.
Mr and Mrs Glands blower depart for Chileano and New York to purchase their full stock of millinery.
A local man, William Miser, displays a rare souvenir badge from the Tippecanoe and Tyler campaign era. The ragged badge features a log cabin and a “Hard Cider” label, with Union of the Whigs for the Sake of the Lion inscribed, and is valued for its age and historic ties.
The Presbytery of Iowa gathers September 1 at Parsons College with events at Ballard and member homes. A ministerial conference runs September 2 to close the following afternoon. Noted speakers include J B Clarke, Archibald Cardle, and E A Bess.
Miss Plora Chatterton, who has been a longtime employee at McElhaney's store, has resigned her position after several months of service.
