British forces that captured Lille are within a mile of Tourcoing to the northeast, a city used as a German secondary supply base. London reports the advance places them close to the German logistics hub as part of ongoing operations.
British Belgian forces report Ostend and Bruges seized as German lines collapse along the Belgian coast. Lille falls in southern Flanders after a sweeping Allied advance that drives General Von Arnim’s 17 division army toward entrapment.
Federal Dam Aitkin Crosby and Ironton on the railroad are reported safe from fires nearby. Fifty fires are reported across St. Louis county. Iron ton and Crosby suspend all business while McGrath is under control. Fires persist near McGregor Aitkin Palusade and Libby.
Secretary McAdoo telegraphed to U S newspapers urging immediate subscriptions to the fourth Liberty loan. He said only two days remain to raise a vast sum, that America can and must do it, and called on every citizen to subscribe to the bonds or use the installment plan with banks ready to assist.
American forces aided by British troops advance at dawn near Le Cateau and cross the River Selle despite fierce German machine gun fire. Soldiers wade through mud to reach the opposite bank, some crossing on pontoons, as the enemy fights to the last.
Northwest of Verdun October 18. American forces capture Grandpre by feinting no artillery prep and fording the Aire at four points. They wade cold water through mud and engage in close combat, driving Germans from the rail head by eleven o'clock.

Senator Jo Hamilton Lewis introduced a resolution to approve whatever course the president may follow in future dealings with Germany and Austria. The measure, first of several peace resolutions, would put the Senate on record as endorsing the president's chosen methods to reach victorious peace and uphold war aims.

London reports a German submarine fired from long range at St. Kilda Scotland on Tuesday injuring a church and other buildings. Doctor McNamara undersecretary of the admiralty disclosed the incident in the House of Commons.
Boston dispatch reports Katharin Breshkovskaya known as The little grandmother of the Russia revolution has died. The German newspaper account says she died of malnutrition while in hiding somewhere in Russia, ending years as a famed nihilist figure.
