Mickel Promoted to Train Auditor for Burlington Line

Elga Mickle, longtime Burlington depot ticket clerk, is promoted to train auditor and departs for Burlington with headquarters in St. Joseph Missouri. He will move his family to Burlington area soon. H J Rodgers becomes night operator and will serve as new ticket agent. Mr Root from Albia takes charge during night duties.

Tampering at Fairfield Gas Power Plant Sparks Alarm

A noon intrusion at Fairfield Gas and Electric Co. damaged the engine by loosening screws and bolts. When restarted last night the cylinder packing was loose and steam escaped, risking a catastrophic explosion. Police urge reduced power use until repairs finish.

Fiftyth wedding anniversary celebrated at Hildebrand home

Mohawk W J Ross of Hutchinson Kansas visited his sister Mrs McClutre. On Monday Oct 7 the 50th anniversary of Mr and Mrs Mike Hildebrand was celebrated with about forty guests. A three course dinner was served and gifts given. Attending from distance were Mrs Eshelman and daughter and others from Ottumwa Brighton Coppock and Mt Pleasant. Also noted were a marriage between Azzie Lillyblade and Joe Dilley with plans to settle near Mt Pleasant. Mr and Mrs Whitmer visited Ottumwa and Mt Pleasant areas for family updates.

Jury Reaches Verdict In Knopp Case At Brighton

The Knopp damage case against the BL and Ry company concluded after eight hours of deliberation. The jury, called by Judge Vermillion, returned a verdict at 1:50 this morning awarding Knopp $500 damages from the original $400 claim. About twelve witnesses testified, drawing local interest.

Rev Jonathan Lee Departs After Long Baptist Pastorate

Destructive August Tornado Marks County History

August weather favored crops but a deadly August tornado caused major damage across Fairfield and surrounding areas. Whitham and Ireland homes were wrecked. McLaury and others were injured or killed. Summerside Chautauqua event raised nearly 1500 dollars. Old Settlers Reunion attracted many, with Major Lacy as principal orator, and the Jefferson County Old Settlers Park Association formed. Mortality notes honor several local figures.

Perlees Couple Wed Quietly at Local Parsonage

Bert Avery and Miss Sadie M Coop of Perlee were quietly wed Sunday at 4 50 p m in the Methodists parsonage. Rev Thomas Osborn officiated. The couple will live on a farm near Perlee. Both are well known and highly regarded residents.

Communion Service At Presbyterian Church Draws Large Crowd

The Sunday service at the Presbyterian church was largely attended and deemed helpful. The pastor lectured on cleansing and two elders were installed. One infant baptized and ten members received into the church. Prof. McMurtry spoke on his Holy Land trip detailing Jericho the Dead Sea the Jordan and Bethlehem with an engaging address.
