The Jefferson District Court abruptly threw out the Gannon case after alleged indictment errors and disputed conduct. Judge Vermillion granted the motion to quash the remaining indictment while the embezzlement verdict against John D. Gannon stood as guilty.
Batavia pair S. G. Salts and Miss Martha Crawford were wed Wednesday evening at the Methodist parsonage on West Briggs street. The Rev. Thomas Osborn officiated just after six o clock. Relatives witnessed the ceremony. The couple plans to live on a farm west of Fairfield and will set up housekeeping soon.
The Archibald Black versus H C Miller administrator for George Black estate case was continued to the next term. Witnesses from Batavia and Libertyville waited in the city after the Gannon case. The trial may occur in November. Related cases against W E Miller and E Schillerstrom for practicing medicine without a license were also continued.
Miss Mary Stever entertained about twelve ladies Friday at a grove picnic near her home west of town. The group explored the woods and enjoyed a sunny afternoon with Miss Stever as hostess. A noon picnic dinner featured fried chicken among the fare, and guests were returned home at day’s end.
A Friday afternoon message announced Alfred Nelson died after a two week illness at his Ashley Hudson Indiana home. Nelson, once a Jefferson county resident, moved to Ashley Hudson three years ago after living in Salina. He is survived by his wife, a brother Richard of Parsonsville, and a sister near the city. Funeral planned at his Indiana home with relatives en route. Nelson was well known among local old soldiers.
Mr and Mrs F I Ogden of near the city invite as their daughter Charlotte Irene Ogden plans to marry Frank L McClain in a Friday evening ceremony at 5330 oclock. Mr and Mrs W E Johnson returned from Des Moines where she had visited for about three weeks. Read the Herald.
John D. Gannon was found guilty of embezzling 500 from Isaac Fryman. The verdict shocked Gannon his wife and his father Atty M V Gannon of Davenport who had expected acquittal. On learning the jury's verdict they were nearly crazed with grief.
Fairfield Commercial Club members convened at the Court Hotel for a frank talk on city needs. Speakers urged water purification, sewer upgrades, street lighting, and a park system while praising private enterprise and calling for unity and planned financing.

Fairfield high school football defeated Sigourney high 17 to 5 on Saturday at Sigourney. The 15 minute halves favored Fairfield as they outplayed in all facets, signaling improved form ahead of next weekend’s game with Albia on the college field.
Evergreen Lodge Degree of Honor hosted Mrs. Etta Branson of Shenandoah for planning the Fairfield District Convention on November 4. Fr an cis Buell Olson of St Paul and Elizabeth R. Alburn of Sioux City were invited to address and attend Omaha events. Grand officers from the state expected. several hundred members anticipated.
Mrs. D. P. Stubbs and Mrs. Theo dore Hochuly hosted about thirty ladies on East Burlington Street for an afternoon card party. Guests enjoyed social chat at small tables, with autumn themed score cards as souvenirs, prizes to Mrs. Ellsworth Turney and Mrs. W. S. Allen, then a two course tea by the Manatrey sisters and Marie Hammon.
