Chicago reports at 4 30 p m Hughes and Wilson each at 255 electoral votes with California New Mexico and North Dakota still undecided New Hampshire shifting to Wilson could decide outcome final results expected after twenty hours both sides claim victory
Hon Geo W Ball elected Senator in the Jefferson Van Buren district by a safe majority. Keosauqua reports place Dr S H Bauman Democratic candidate for this office with a 337 plurality in his home county. Ball leads Jefferson by 522 with a net plurality of 186 not counting Co M. Brownsville precinct may widen Ball's margin. John W Rowley likely elected Representative in Van Buren county.
The Daily Journal's election night service is praised for accuracy and impartiality. It reported Leggett ahead of Tribune in one race and announced Democrats Mowery Spence and Ball as winners while noting a cut in city gas cutoffs. Assistants from Western Union and local exchanges aided prompt reception of Jefferson on Van Buren county news.
Jefferson county creates Brownsville precinct with Co M border duty. All results thus far labeled complete omit Brownsville figures, which will be added to other totals. First Regiment totals show Hughes 290 Wilson 169 Harding 302 Meredith 145.
Charles A. Kennedy wins re election to Congress from the First district by what appears to be his largest plurality in twelve years. Reported district tallies show Kennedy leading by strong margins across several areas with the results still being confirmed.
Chicago, Nov. 9. The presidential race remains in doubt with California switching to Hughes then Wilson, Nevada favoring Wilson, Washington and Nevada leaning Wilson, Minnesota undecided, Oregon Hughes lead, North Dakota swing to Hughes, and West Virginia and New Hampshire unsettled. Senate and governors results are listed with multiple states shown for both parties.
In early returns from New York, Governor Whitman leads Hughes and Calder by wide margins. Estimated plura lities show Hughes ahead of Wilson by 155 600 and Calder ahead of Mc Combs by about 220 000, with Whitman about 200 000 over Seabury.
Louisville reports the struggle over state effort in Kentucky distracts from the presidential race. The Democratic state administration, elected last year by a narrow 400 margin, lost ground this year as Republicans attempted a reversal. Democrats carry Kentucky by 15,000 with seven of nine congressmen won.
