Harding official records show over 125 000 entries logged. Authorities report ongoing data compilation and verification across departments. Officials urge public cooperation to resolve discrepancies and complete the tally.
The piece reports Democratic victories and Republican resistance after a national election. It notes Hughes winning nationally while Wilson support remains strong in Minnesota the Dakotas Kansas Nebraska and Missouri. In Iowa E T Meredith suffers a large deficit while Des Moines Register and Leader loses influence. Local results show Kennedy re elected Bauman trailing Ball in Jefferson county and multiple county and state posts decided.
New York voters cast the largest total in state history about 1 800 000. Hughes leads outside New York City while Wilson carries the city margins show Whitman reelected with a large city plurality. Lodge defeats Fitzgerald for Senate.
Early returns show Wilson with 256 electoral votes to Hughes 230 with California 138 Minnesota 12 New Hampshire 4 New Mexico 3 Oregon 5 and West Virginia 8 still in doubt. In Des Moines Harding ahead by about 100000. Iowa expected to favor Hughes by 75000. Keosauqua Bauman leads Ball by 133 with Van Buren County total unlikely to exceed 200.
In Wilmington on November 8 9 a fierce Delaware senatorial contest unfolds with the Du Pont family feud at center stage. Republicans back Henry A. Du Pont for a renewed seat while Independent Republicans led by Alfred I. Du Pont aim to oust him and promote Coleman Du Pont involvement. The Democrats back Josiah O Wilcott as the opposition candidate.
Massachusetts returns show Henry Cabot Lodge ahead of John F. Fitzgerald amid Wilson attacks while Governor Samuel W. McCall seeks a second term against Frederick W. Mansfield. Early results indicate Hughes leading the state by about 20 900 votes amid delays in tallying returns.
Detroit voters saw Henry Ford as a United States Senate candidate with Townsend and Lawrence Prince on the ballot. Ford ran as a Progressive while prohibition ads flooded the state, with Reverend Billy Sunday leading anti drink efforts. Hughes appears to have carried Michigan by about 20,000, and Republicans won the ticket outside Detroit and Grand Rapids.
Louisville voters weigh state offices as Democratic administration battles Republicans in Kentucky with a slim 400 vote edge. Charles Hughes opens election day by stealing some of Wilson's thunder, ballot No. 18, and is noted to have been born on Friday.
