Fire Sunday afternoon gutted the Bates farm house two miles north of town. Mrs. Sarah Bates lived there with Derry Bates. The blaze started from a chimney spark and spread quickly, leaving little behind. Insurance covered part of the loss but not enough to pay for the damage.

Obituary of Alfred G. Wrenn of Mt Ayr Iowa
Alfred G. Wrenn born near McMinnville Tennessee October 1 1835 died April 2 190? aged 70 years six months and 14 days. He moved to Jefferson County Iowa in 1840 and was the last surviving member of his mother's family. He married Lucetta Crenshaw on April 3 1859 and had four children three living Mrs J L Donahoe Des Moines S A Webb California John Webb Alaska W D Webb Peabody Jan and Mrs Jed Ferber Poe township and ten grandchildren. He served in Co M 4th Iowa Cavalry from September 1862 to war end and belonged to Ells e Miller Post G A R Mt Ayr. In spring 1876 he moved to Ringgold County and later resided in Mt Ayr. His last illness lasted two weeks.
