Preliminary debates at high school with student participants
In the assembly room the high school held preliminary debates on two topics. The first supported cooperation over competition with Castile Merckens and Gorrell for the affirmative and Harris Black and Scheffel for the negative. A second topic argued absolute freedom for possessions not on the American continent with Calhoun and Ross for the affirmative and Stewart Wise Carver for the negative. Judges Gage Hicks and A Herring ruled in favor of Black Scheffel Harris Gorrell Wisecorver and Ross. Minnie Stewart named alternate. A final contest will be in the opera house February 16 1906 with a five dollar prize for the top three.

Feud Ends In Shootings At Eldon Iowa
In Eldon Iowa during a long standing feud between Red Russell and Marshal Samuel Crow a gunfight left Red Russell fatally wounded and Crow wounded in the melee. Frank Russell attacked Crow outside the saloon and both exchanged fire. Crow was hit in the hand leg and head while Frank Russell was wounded lightly. The feud began years ago when Crow fired at Russell during an arrest attempt.

Horse Breaks Through Rotten Ice at Water Works
A horse belonging to Henry Byard fell through rotten ice on a pond at the water works Friday afternoon. Men used a rope and cut a channel to free the animal, keeping its head above water. The horse was nearly frozen and rescue halted further ice operations on that pond.
