Artillery Battery Formation Undergoing Quick Organization
In southeastern Iowa a new artillery battery is forming with interest rising in Fairfield Brighton Batavia and Lockridge recruiting about twenty men from Fairfield last Monday. County Auditor A L Felker of Burlington expects captaincy and explains drafted men may enlist but if not activated before their draft they must join the draft. The unit aims for immediate service with enlistments to gain experience and potential later artillery assignments at Camp Dodge. The battery would enter Federal service intact unless drafted. otherwise draft rules apply with oath aligning to Co M standards and wartime mustering procedures.
