Assembly closes with largest crowd at Fairfield Chautauqua

The Eighth Annual Fairfield Chautauqua ended last Friday in a blaze of glory drawing the largest park crowd yet. Iowa State Band performed popular music with encores, and Ex-Senator Lafe Young spoke on around the world and Iowa’s wealth. Senator Kenyon delivered a lecture on Bishop Myriel, praising altruism and modern heroism while affirming American colonial progress.

Company M at Ottumwa Camp In Iowa National Guard

Members of Company M, Fifty fourth Regiment Iowa National Guard, leave for Ottumwa where the regiment camps for ten days. Captain Ready leads about eight hundred men with 50 from Company F Burlington aboard Burlington No 3 at 6 50 this morning. Miss Carrie Isreal Dies After Illness in Fairfield

Carrie E Isreal died Sunday afternoon at her home on West Jefferson Street after eight weeks of pneumonia and complications. Born March 13 1588 in Bona Parte Van Buren county she was the only daughter of George Isreal. The family moved to Fairfield four years ago where she became a popular member of the younger set. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home.

Fairfield Exhibits Spark Percheron Class at State Fair

The Paris horses failed to win as five prizes were offered in Fairfield Iowa. The main contest pitted Robert Burgess & Son of Winnona Illinois against Maasdam & Wheeler of Fairfield Iowa. Burgess stables captured the blue ribbon with Garage while the Iowa stable Gil lot finished a close second.

Fulton duo bound over on charges after preliminary hearing

Ottumwa authorities report Justice of the Peace W J Berry bound P L Fulton and W A Fulton of Fairfield over to the grand jury after a Friday preliminary hearing. Judge Berry withheld verdict until Saturday as documents and exhibits were turned over for investigation. The charges, filed by T H Carrick, allege the Fultons threatened to extort.

Resigning Pastor Rev Harry Burns Leaves Fairfield Church

Rev Harry M Burns preached his farewell sermon as pastor of the Baptist church in Fairfield and will depart within days. He may return to Mt Pleasant to finish studies at Iowa Wesleyan College. Burns has led the church about a year and earned friends for himself and the church.

Keokuk Gate City reports In Van Buren county a sensational case indicts E L McCord of Hughes McCoid for forgery. Bond set at 1000. The matter centers on settlements involving Martha Fletcher and Clay Ketchum of Farmington. Judge Hughes defends McCord as innocent while noting alleged post signing alteration to a receipt.

Ready to Build Ice Plant in Fairfield

A. B. Rogers and partners have bought a site on Grimes street for an artificial ice plant with 93 feet of frontage and 132 feet adjoining the Rock Island track. The brick building will house a 25 ton per day facility and may include an ice cream factory. Construction will start soon to prevent famine and assure supply.
