Allied and American forces report gains across Flanders and Lorraine sectors. British and French actions yield village captures and prisoner totals, with American troops taking Frapelle and consolidating trenches amid counter-fire.
Paris Agence report states on a ten mile front the French have pushed forward about one and one third miles. The line runs west of Soissons along the Aisne to Ribecourt and Machecourt, with occupation of the Pleateau of Nampoel seven miles northwest of Fertechy.
On August 19 near Fismes US and German planes battled over clouds south of the lines. Five American planes faced eight German fighters in a lively dogfight with planes downed and at least one German hit. Two Americans crashed in the wood southeast of Fismes as anti aircraft fire pressed the fight.
Paris reports Nouron Vingre fell to Allied forces after a successful assault. The capture includes 1700 prisoners and substantial stores. Among the prisoners were two battalion commanders.
British troops have made further progress near Menville and a number of prisoners were taken in these actions.
Paris reports the French Tenth army has driven east of the Oise and penetrated to a depth of about two miles along a several mile front.
British troops report the capture of Outterston Ridge in front of Morris and repelled several vicious counter attacks, inflicting very heavy losses on the German forces.
Tokyo reports severe rioting over high food prices, especially rice. Two hundred stores, depots, and theaters raided while police and troops clash with crowds. Similar disturbances erupt in Osaka and Nagoya amid widespread economic distress and calls for reform.
On the Vesle front August 19 the Germans repeatedly bombed a lone Red Cross marked field hospital. An observing plane signaled artillery then shells struck the dressing station, killing three doctors and four patients, with ten more injured and a chaplain blown aside.
Provost Marshal General Crowder announced printing of all forms for the September 24 registration of men who have passed twenty first birthdays since June 5 1915 and between August 24 1918 and before August 24 2018. Registration cards will resemble prior forms with registration numbers filled by the adjutant general in each state.
President Wilson spent Sunday resting in Manchester Massachusetts. He walked to the summer home of Colonel R. E. House nearby, continuing a quiet respite days after arrival.
Col onel and Mrs. House attended the president's dinner as Mrs. Wilson hosted the meal with guests.
A ramkal sunk by a U boat off Norfolk Virginia. The captain and crew were rescued by a hydroplane near land. Ten crewmen were killed and seven injured. The injured were taken ashore to a hospital.
