Paris reports French troops south of Roye advanced into Loge’s wood and cleared it of enemy forces after heavy fighting. They moved to the wood’s eastern outskirts where a desperate struggle for control continues.
London report notes the Picary area remains satisfactory and British advances continue at most held points. North of the Ancre River, progress is described as good despite determined enemy resistance.
German forces countered with gas and bombardment as French and American troops along the Vesle advance. French and Canadian units push west of Roye toward Goyencourt and Laucourt while Haig reports progress toward Fresnoy-les-Roye and Fransart.
British forces advance eastward north of the Amiens Roye road following yesterday’s success at Villers les Roye. Allied gains render the Roye area increasingly untenable as troops tighten around the region.
Maj General J Mel Carter, noted for leading the militia division in the War Department, is set to be assigned to a division in France.
Don Cossacks clear the left bank of the Don and push toward Zara gin in a progress reported from Kiev. northern Don forces enter Voronesh. talks of a joint central government with adjoining leaders. Britain and allies push against Bolsheviks from Archangel to Baku as American troops land at Vladivostok.
Lieut. Harold F. Maxon of Los Angeles and Cadet G. F. Gedeon of Titusville were killed when their aircraft crashed in a hayfield near Commack New York on August 17.
United States Senator Gallinger died last night at Franklin New Hampshire following a period of illness. A prior notice indicated his condition was critical as the aging lawmaker faced health decline.

Louis B. Nagler former assistant secretary of state is sentenced to 30 months in Fort Leavenworth after espionage act conviction. County Judge J. M. Becker receives three years, with one month stay for appeal. Madison druggist Charles H. Naffz fined $2,000 for espionage act violation.
Three people were killed and many injured when an Illinois freight train plowed through a bridge at Julien west of Dubuque this morning. The crash disrupted service and prompted emergency response.
Washington, Aug. 17. Secretary Baker and Surgeon General Gorgas began framing a plan to index soldiers named in casualty lists so relatives can obtain detailed information immediately from the war department. Currently, information is brought from France by couriers every seven days.
In Petersburg on August 17 a public meeting heard two thousand foreign-born soldiers from Camp Lee recite the oath of allegiance and become citizens. Assistant secretary of labor Louis I. Post of Chicago participated in the ceremonies.
Washington announces furloughs for enlisted soldiers to engage in emergency agricultural work. The war department said men in camp may obtain leave to help with farm labor due to the current need for harvest and food production.
General Pershing reports an 18 aircraft American De Haviland Four squadron flew a first reconnaissance behind German lines in early August. After two months of work the $8 billion war revenue bill is nearly ready. The key decision is whether to adopt the McAdoo profits tax or the Kitchin system. The bill boosts taxes on earned incomes over $4,000 and imposes steep surcharges up to 75 percent for large estates. An installment payment plan is proposed to manage the tax flow.
The government has taken over the Ford Motor Company’s St. Louis branch comprising an assembling plant service station and offices. The five story building spans half a city block and will be used as a warehouse for the war effort.
