Paris reports the Germans may be preparing to evacuate Noyon after the loss of the Lassigny heights. It is likely stores are being destroyed and evacuated as part of the retreat.
Reuters report says French First Army gains control of Lassigny heights and surrounding trenches after stubborn combat. Allied forces advance toward Roye and Noyon while German retreat and village fires at Peronne and along the Vesle are noted. aviators report disarray behind the German line.
Brigadier General John E Mahoney is listed among Marine Corps officers given general ships. He saw active service in the Spanish American War the Philippines Mexico Haiti and San Domingo. He began as second lieutenant in 1883 became first lieutenant in 1890 and captain in 1900. He is stationed at Guantanamo Bay Cuba.
Allied forces seized Lassigny Massif in an unexpected breakthrough. German resistance remained stubborn as machine gun outposts fell back. valleys behind the front lines faced heavy exposure to mustard gas and other shelling.
French forces in the Champagne district east of Rheims conducted several raids and took prisoners in each operation.

Born in York County Virginia in 1856.
London reports the British government formally recognizes the Czecho-Slovaks as an allied nation and their three armies as an allied force actively fighting the central powers. Dispatches from Moscow via Berlin claim Entente envoys pressed War Minister Trotsky for three day action on Lenine’s pledge to declare war on Anglo French imperialism.
Paris report says along the Vesle river where the Crown Prince's retreat was staged German raiders were repelled in ineffectual attacks. French and American troops hold the lines.
British ships and aircraft claim to have destroyed a German airship north of Ameland after a dawn sighting off the east coast. An admiralty report notes heavy air attacks with six motorboats missing. In New York, Anna Held, famed actress, dies after long illness. she divorced Florenz Ziegfeld Jr in 1912 and had a daughter in France.
National League results show Chicago tied Pittsburgh at 2-2, New York 5-5 with Boston 4-2, Brooklyn 2-4 to Philadelphia 1-8, St. Louis 0 and Cincinnati 6. American League notes Philadelphia 3-1 and Washington 6-6. no other games were played.

In Chicago August 14 the United States circuit court of appeals affirmed the three year sentence of Walter Kugansky who was charged with threatening to kill the president of the United States. Judge Landis presided over the original sentencing.

Washington report on a new man power draft bill with work or fight provisions for all men aged 18 to 45 in deferred status. Amendments include education at government expense for under twenty one, and ending discrimination in commissions for drafted men and volunteers. Berlin reports the French transport Djemnah of 3716 tons was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. The dispatch from Berlin has been confirmed in Paris.
