Mexicans Told to Go to Work or to War in Fort Madison
In Fort Madison on August 4, about 200 Mexican laborers who walked out of Santa Fe shops after wage demands were refused faced an ultimatum from State's Attorney J. M. C. Hamilton and Sheriff J. B. Watkins to work, go to war, or return to Mexico. Authorities warned the strikers their threats and loafing would not be tolerated, and urged them to work or leave the country. The action followed grievances over the government’s wage raise exclusion bias toward the workers.
