A quiet ceremony held yesterday at 5 PM at the Davis home on West Washington, uniting Ruth Evangeline Davis and Norvell Switzer in a double ring rite conducted by Rev. R H Polly. Mary Alice Davis carried the rings. Helen Davis sang. an elegant three course dinner followed.
Yesterday and today twenty-seven young men offered themselves for Uncle Sam's service. Postmaster J W Dole hosted Recruiting Officer F K Minor and presented twenty-one volunteers. Harold Swain and Clair Monson were rejected for slight arm abnormalities, with possible eyesight issues also barring another applicant. Company M expected a rush to join tonight and tomorrow, aiming to fill enlistment limits before further recruitment ends. Navy enlistment is for four years.
Nearly all the men of the 1917 class at F H S have enlisted, including Bradfield Zillman Gossick Randall Fourt Ebert Brawner Larson and Day. It is probable diplomas will be issued to all these seniors at commencement next June.
The fortieth annual meeting of the Women s Societies of Home and Foreign Missions of the Iowa Presbytery elected officers. Local officers include President Cora Smiley Winfield and Vice President Mrs P Palmer Mediapolis. Foreign officers named Mrs W E Parsons Fairfield and others filling the roles of secretary treasurer and youth literature and extension work secretaries.
North High of Des Moines swept the Tri State Track and Field meet scoring 53 points. They won most events including the 100 yard dash mile run 120 yard hurdles 440 dashes 220 hurdles 880 yard run 220 yard dash high jump broad jump half mile relay and second in mile relay. Wellman Washington and Iowa City tied for second with 10 points each. Three North High runners Colby McDaniels and Scarpins tied for individual top points with Lewis of Wellman at 10.

Parsons College won the triangular track meet at Oskaloosa over Penn and Wesleyan with eight firsts to Wesleyan’s four and Penn’s two. The event was a rain soaked mud fest. Zeigler scored three firsts and shared a pole vault, Flinspack took discus and shot put, Atwood won the two mile, Keesey won high hurdles, Gallaher placed in sprints and hurdles, Stever was second in the mile, and Parsons finished strong in the relays.
Prominent Stockport native B B Hughes dies at home in Des Moines after wintering in San Antonio. Survived by wife Mary Stonebraker Hughes, daughter Mrs Charles F Nutt, son Newton Hughes, and sister Reforming, with services at East Burlington Street residence conducted by Rev W R Keesey before Winchester interment.
Oscar Alverson son of a mail carrier from this city enlisted in the 1st Illinois Cavalry and took the federal oath. He formerly lived in Fairfield and was educated at Fairfield Business College and worked at London Machinery Co. He writes from Chicago dated April 18 that the unit will drill and may be called to Springfield for duty.
