Anthony Thompson Dies Oldest Colored Man in New Jersey
Anthony Thompson, the oldest and best known colored man in Essex County New Jersey, died at his West Orange residence on Tuesday night. Born in 1798 in Raritan Somerset County, he was manumitted by Samuel Ward after years of servitude and later settled in Orange, working for the Williams family for generations. His life spanned from slave beginnings to freedom and old age, with care for his mother and long residence in Orange.
