Decoration Day 1883 Observances at City Hall and Cemetery
Decoration Day events began at City Hall with a processional wagon line and cadets, veterans, and citizens carrying flowers. The Catholic cemetery visit featured band music and decoration of graves, followed by a Normal chapel program in the afternoon delayed by rain. Speakers included Rev. The crowd honored soldiers and praised the Union’s achievement amid vivid memories and a poignant recitation of the last words of a flag.
