The Eagle publishes an interview with Tynan in which he says detectives know his location and he can be found when sought by the British Government. He asserts Carey’s testimony was false and suggests extradition would extend to others. Tynan came here without trouble and predicts Parnell will push for local self government in Ireland.
Artillery and church bells announced the start of yesterday's procession in Moscow. The line included police, gendarmes, guards, Cossacks, dragoons, Asiatic deputations, nobility, court servants, diplomats, and the Imperial family led by the Emperor and Empress in a state carriage with eight horses.
In Motcomery Alabama on May 24 the United States Marshal Strobach's attorneys filed demurrers to his indictments. After argument the judge sustained the demurrers. The next day several more indictments were returned against Strobach including one for perjury along with indictments against Thomas J. Scott then United States Land Register for misconduct as United States Deputy Marshal and against two other deputies under Marshal Osborne.
Recommending to Mercy in New York on May 23 Merriott was found guilty of grand larceny for absconding from Paris with $75 000 in diamonds entrusted to him. The jury asked mercy. His wife, who accompanied him and whom he married, sat by him in prison showing grief. An appeal on technical points is anticipated.
On May 23 a real estate suit in New York began over the estates of Margaret Mary and Sarah Burr. John Riker, executor of Margaret and Mary, sues the Society of the New York Hospital and about seventy five defendants seeking distribution of property and to validate or deny gifts made by the wills to certain societies. The case centers on the validity of Sarah Burr’s will and the transfer to the executors.
Cornelius Shea, after life, six months of marriages, sold the furniture bought by her money and deserted her last August. In December he telegraphed his wife that he was in the Worcester jail. He would be imprisoned six months unless she sent him 50. The Troy police learned he was not under arrest. He was later said to be married in Taunton, Mass. The Trojan wife left for Taunton to prosecute, and he also abandoned his second wife.
On May 23 two men imprisoned themselves in a crib at the lake end of Fullerton Avenue during the great storm. They were rescued this morning by the life-saving crew after exertion. Great crowds gathered along the shore and the men were found not seriously injured.
