Death of a Soldier of 1812 at Mass Vessel Hero
SoMeRvInte Mass May 18 Martin Burchess an 1812 veteran died at his son's home aged 97. He was the last survivor of Captain James Lawrence s Hornet party that captured the British brig Peacock with Burchess climbing the mast to spot the white flag. He warned the guard over 136 prisoners, aiding their attempt to take the ship, and later attended a victory dinner in New York. In 1869, at 81, he traveled to California to visit two sons. The end of a roller skating contest at Madison Square Garden in New York, May 8, drew 2000 spectators the largest crowd since the event opened. The six day race ended with Reynolds winning the mile, Snowden s valet receiving the belt, and a dull finish as the crowd dispersed.
