General John A Logan was born February 9, 1826 in Jackson County Illinois. A lawyer and politician he served as prosecuting attorney and in the Illinois legislature, then U S congressman as a Douglas Democrat, later a Union general rising to major general and commanding the Army of the Tennessee. Of Covington Kentucky, long served in Congress since 1877 and presiding in the house. Born at Campbell now Kenton county in September 1885, he taught school, practiced law after admission in 1858, served in the state assembly and senate, and held lieutenant governor offices. He was a delegate to the 1869 national convention and an alternate presidential elector in 1876. His congressional term began March 5 1877 with the forty fifth congress.
