Million Pine Lumber Fire Roars Through Chicago District
Chicago May 9. A vast lumber fire swept the southwestern riverfront district destroying pine stacks, homes, a scow, and several mills. Firemen battled more than eight hours as flames spread in a half mile arc. Loss estimated at 1.5 million with Chicago Lumber Co, Bigelow Bros, Adams Hastings, and G W Hinckley and Co among sufferers. Five dwellings burned. many residents fled with property saved or buried.
