AMERICAN FISHERY SOCIETY MEETS IN WASHINGTON
The fourteenth annual meeting of the American Fishery Society convened at the National Museum. President Thomas Lyman opened proceedings as committees were appointed and papers on Puget Sound clams and black bass hibernation were presented. Amid a basement collapse at a soap and soap-factory complex behind 53 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn, a blaze and panic left 25 believed dead and many injured. Firemen and citizens pulled trapped workers from ruins while dozens leaped or fell to escape flames.
Fire Rips Atlantic Street Buildings Involving 500 Workers
A devastating blaze at 55 Atlantic Street incinerated a four story wood structure housing twenty small manufacturers and about 500 workers. Boilers toppled, a roof jack broke, and several bodies were recovered as police tallies placed missing at a dozen or fewer. Firemen and families gathered as detectives arrested Frank W. Miler for criminal carelessness in the girders and posts matter.
