Academy fire destroys St Josephs at Emmitsburg

An early afternoon blaze at St Josephs Academy Emmitsburg Md started in the kitchen and, driven by strong winds, destroyed the main building and part of the sisters department. Pupils were saved and the property is insured for 600000 in Baltimore Philadelphia and New York firms. A special train carried aid from Frederick to the scene.

Militia Seizes State Auditor’s Office in Des Moines

In Des Moines Iowa on March 91 a militia company of eleven under General Alexander battered the door of Auditor Brown’s office at the Capitol and took possession. Brown and his assistant resisted but were overpowered. Cattell arrived as new Auditor but could not transact any business as records were locked in the safe with key missing. Brown plans to appeal to the courts and warned the state treasurer not to pay funds on Cattell’s authority. The militia actions stirred city-wide excitement.
