Engineer J Samuel Smith was killed instantly and the colored fireman died later. The engine was demolished and the engineer's body cut in two. About 150 passengers were aboard and none were hurt.
The engineer risked his life during a 75 yard dash to reverse the engine and apply air brakes, saving others after a switch repair by a careless section master caused the collision. The master was arrested and jailed in default of $9,000 bail.
Conductor Penfold of the Canadian Southern Railway found an elderly man near Highgate, Ontario, ill and presumed dead on No 8. A draft for 16 467 reichsmarks from the Verein Bank of Nuremberg issued by First National Bank Lafayette named Andrew Bierkien. Funds included 100 in bills 50 in gold and 1 25 in silver. A letter from John Sattler Lafayette to Rev A Keys in New York aided identification. The body was sent to an undertaker. authorities in Lafayette were asked for disposition instructions.
In Cortrrsviniz Alabama, a boundary dispute between A. B. Hall and sons and Bob and John Mullens over adjoining property led to violence. Tom Hall built a fence. Bob Mullens attempted removal and was shot dead by Hall. John Mullens was fatally wounded, returned fire fatally killing Hall. Hall's father then killed by Mullens, who then fell dying.

Ashland sees 23 collieries flooded by yesterday's storm with 320000 loss. Easton records 75000 railroad damages and seven bridges swept away. Delaware River rising. mills idle. Cairo faces cholera fears with four deaths on two French ironclads and two local deaths likely miscounted as authorities withhold details.

In Ketaspora Illinois on June 29 Hiram Blair shot his wife after she attracted another man's attention. She fled about 100 yards before Blair overtook her and fatally shot her. He then killed himself.
Ex police sergeant Hanson and Doorkeeper Smith were arrested and charged with robbing prisoner Pheeny of 190 dollars several weeks ago.
Isaac A. Briggs broker Wesley Lyon lawyer and Emil Brie Stamford lawyer are arrested in New York on a charge of selling forged Missouri state bonds to Edwin R. Kirke. Kirke was induced to purchase bonds valued at 271,000.
Special to the Associated Press. Litenherp Conc. June 39. Charles Moore town clerk has disappeared and is accused of forgery and stealing $2,000 in town bonds. He was recently married to a highly connected lady.
Special to the Associated Press reports that Constable Davis and G G Davis with one Hutson went to Bland City to arrest Lane Britton, a desperado who killed a man two years ago. In the attempt the constable was killed and G G Davis mortally wounded.
Alexandria reports fifty four deaths from an epidemic with fears of local spread as British troops prepare cholera camps in surrounding county. Syracuse records nine year old Michael O'Donnell drowned, body recovered, and seventy year old Sarah McHale survived a suicide attempt. Baltimore notes a Jersey cow Value 2d, 6844, produced 827 pounds milk and twenty five pounds two ounces of butter in seven day test. St Louis describes moderate flood relief efforts by Venice relief committee and Red Cross providing aid to distressed families.

Special Dispatch to the Evening Observer reports a freight train crossing Baranoo Wisconsin’s iron bridge failed, collapsing two engines and three cars. Fireman Albert Gothing, on the first engine, was killed. the second engine's crew escaped by jumping to safety.
