James M. Whaling, a well dressed middle aged man, was arrested at West Point on charges of swindling a New York hotel proprietor out of a board bill for himself, wife, and child totaling over 900 dollars. He paid with a 400 dollar draft on a Buffalo firm that was dishonored and borrowed 3200 from Mr Barney at West Point with another unpaid draft. Whaling is said to have swindled several hotels in New York and another downtown businessman out of 15000 dollars.
