Horrible Discovery at Harmonton Foundling Home
Telegraph reports a grim find at Miss Nivison s foundling asylum in Harmonton New Jersey where twenty one of twenty three infants buried on the premises in rough boxes without death certificates or permits. Dr Ezra Hunt notes the deaths blamed on measles were unproven and inquest examines Miss Nivison who defends her humane care and claims a fatalist routine. She testifies the infants were fed tea with morphine and milk or milk and moss, while the verdict cites natural causes worsened by improper sanitary conditions and lack of medical attendance. The home receives support from George W Childs of Philadelphia and Mrs Astor of New York.
