In Portsmouth Ohio in 1882 Simon Snyder’s severed hand was buried in his garden after amputation. Two weeks later a fungus shaped like a hand sprouted on the mound made by his 12 year old daughter. The curious specimen, preserved in alcohol, drew hundreds of visitors and sparked superstition. Snyder and family moved to Conesville Iowa, with the fungus now in their possession.
Col Culver of Duluth dies suddenly in a Buffalo hotel. Other items of the past include a TY four hours later, with brief notices of events and arrivals from prior days.
On the Tex arkana branch of the Texas and Pacific Railroad several cars of the west bound freight train went through a bridge this morning. The east bound passenger train struck the freight as it could not reach a siding. Six engines were badly smashed and the passenger engineer was fatally injured.

A Read ing Railroad anthracite furnace boiler explosion in Kutztown early today killed Frank Waltman aged 21 and badly injured several coworkers including Solomon Waltman Morris Good and Engineer Marstellar. The engine and boiler-house were demolished and damage runs into thousands of dollars.
In Berea on July 18 a middle aged man with iron gray hair entered the Mansion house barber shop for a shave.
