The Evening Observer presents itself as a partisan, non political newspaper serving Dunkirk and Northern Cheenant, outlining its editorial stance and purpose to report events without political bias while promoting local interests.
The missive defends the Couriers from criticisms by former staffer Dudley and cites letters from Charles W. McCune of the Covaen Company and Prowas Keas of Convex disavowing knowledge of a published paragraph. It blames Dudley, ridicules an attack on McCune, and defends the paper against alleged favors and political insinuations.
A Buffalo assemblyman Donahue proposes a city charter overhaul to reorganize police and fire departments. A police commission would control appointments with five and seven year terms, plus a new superintendent and costly salaries. Critics call the plan a bid to grab offices for five years, kept secret and never shown to the public or council. The Advertiser condemns the move as undemocratic and urges disclosure before action.
Correspondence from the OBSERVER reports items of local news gathered by a corps of reporters. Readers find brief notes on towns, people, and small events stitched into a single communal update.
A long, irregular missive discusses moral reforms, weathering a hurricane, and a past mob attack on a village. It praises a newspaper editor, notes international readership in Europe, and questions the fate of an eminent writer named “Wide Awake.” It ends urging support from Ex-Mayor Brooks and Dr A. Phillips.
West Sheridan reports a lively social at Mr. and Mrs. Dodge on the 18th, with 42 attendees from the district. Music by Miss Nellie and others, games, supper, and plans for a next gathering at the Sulson residence on February 5th are noted, along with local visits and minor notices from Dunkirk and nearby towns.
A Fredonia column reports chaotic reaction to a temperance push at the Normal School, detailing misread notices, arrests questioned, and a heated debate over beer licensing. The piece criticizes the local committee and cites confusion among officials while noting shifting opinions on enforcement.
Details timetables and local train stops for the Lew Trunk Line with morning westward departures. Notes on service to Carrollton, Dunkirk, Cuba, Hinsdale, Vandalia, and other stations, including daily and Sunday variations and connections to Chicago. Ends with contact info for the railway company offices.
