By Telegraph. The House adjourned after news of Ex-Speaker Schuyler Colfax's death. Debates and votes filled the day as Senate actions included a Sherman statement debate and bills on army retirement and inter state commerce. The House also adopted a resolution of respect for Colfax.
Ex Vice President Schuyler Colfax collapsed and died of heart disease at the Omaha depot in Mankato Minnesota while awaiting a Chicago, Milwaukee and St Paul train. News from South Bend and Chicago describe widespread mourning for Colfax, a former Speaker and U.S. Senator. He was born in 1824 and pursued journalism, Indiana politics, and national service before his vice presidency. The funeral details await announcement.
New York January 14 Captain Phelan, the wounded dynamiter, is rapidly recovering. Doctor Bull says he may leave the hospital in ten days, praising his extraordinary vitality. Phelan vows revenge, claiming a conspiracy to ruin his life and threatens to square accounts with O Donavan Rossa and others. Witnesses may defend him, while Kearney is to testify to Phelan’s armed visit to Rossa’s office.

In South Bend Indiana about 400 to 800 Polanders employed at Oliver’s Chilled Plow Works struck for higher wages. Workers smashed offices tore fences and clashed with Guards and officers. Captain Nicar was wounded and militia restored order as arrests followed. The strike spread to nearby Oliver Bros and Phillips mills affecting up to 2000 workers.

In Campin New Jersey George A Zane 30 an engineer was shot by his brother John at the home of Thomas McClintock. George married Christmas day and a wedding party followed. The quarrel over serving beer led to the shooting as George stepped between brothers. he cannot live. John Zane is under arrest awaiting outcome. Also Delaware governor Stockley proclaims contagious pleuro pneumonia in cattle and orders quarantine. He urges law enforcement to enforce provisions and warns of penalties. He visited the cattle region yesterday.
