Destruction of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception at Belville

A large fire in Belville Saturday night destroyed the Convent of the Immaculate Conception. The Bellville fire department could only reach the second story due to ladders and poor equipment. Inmates on the third and fourth stories perished, while nearby Saint Agnes Orphan Asylum, St. Peter's Church, and the Travison Agricultural Works were saved. A list of victims includes Livingisch, Jerome, Sister Edwina, Minnie Bailey, Laura Thompson, Agnes Svaiting, Laura, Exina Stark, Lottie Piers, Josephine Plawire, Mary Barnets, Martha Aluuited, and others. The catastrophe ranks with the Southern Hotel fire of 1877. A relief and investigation effort continues.
