An excerpted verse narrative follows Jean the Poet as he encounters light amid darkness. The aged world, flowers, and a silent crowd shape his reverent quest for truth. The poem hints at a revelation where speech and thought reveal a higher mystery and the waiting multitudes learn.
A sailor Frank Ludlow recalls his mother's blessing and a window light guiding him home. After his mother dies, she asks a lamp to burn until he dies, and the scene shifts to a voyage where the lamp becomes a beacon from heaven. The tale ends with Frank’s death as the light returns above. Clean schools now number about one thousand pupils and are presided over by twenty efficient teachers.
