Grant Wilde and Ingersoll in a railway car tale
A long excerpt profiles Gen Grant Oscar Wilde and Robert Ingersoll as travelers in a railroad car. It contrasts Grant's detached, smoke filled silence with Wilde's swagger and Ingersoll's sociable, talkative style, ending with a recollection of a night voyage where Ingersoll entertains passengers. The piece weaves anecdotes about these notable figures with a Bret Harte career sketch and Peck's Sun founder.

A Baltimore American New York correspondent recounts a daughter of a wealthy Fifth Avenue family who vanishes after a shopping outing. Years later a police captain encounters the now-mistreated woman in custody, she recounts her past actions, and she dies from a self-inflicted wound after a brief reunion with her father. The piece also cites Dr. Ward on throat health and a Musical Critic note on catarrhal troubles for singers.
