Senate Debates Fortunes and Charity Notes From Dunkirk
The Evening Observer from Dunkirk reports the Senate approved a ten thousand dollar appropriation for two monuments to Baron De Kalb at Annapolis and discussed presidential succession. The Fitz John Porter case dominated a lengthy session, with Benatar Logan denouncing Porter’s actions. Wool and woolens schedules advanced, and a White House reception was arranged. A year end appeal to St Mary’s Asylum donors is listed, thanking benefactors and noting a heartfelt Christmas Eve gift from the Brooks.
