By Telegraph Great success opening of the Erie Store draws crowds to Monroe Block Dunkirk with a display of bargains. The report also notes other items including Carnegie's reply to St James Gazette and various brief dispatches from across the country.
Boston August 22 report says United States steamer Tallapoosa collided with the collier Lowell off Martha's Vineyard and sank in ten minutes. Four were lost: Surgeon E Black, seaman O Donel, and two others. crew saved largely by ships Gate City and Lowell. Tallapoosa carried Secretary Chandler and party en route to Newport. Fish Hawk aided rescue.
The Nation's Capital reports the appointment of Willard P. Tisdel of Painesville as U S agent to the Congo Association. He has traveled widely, speaks Portuguese, and shortly departs for duty. Also noted is a government display push for American inventions at the Kewo Exposition with requests for small working models.

Flattrorn Conn August 23 The elegant Morgan memorial monument in Cedar Hill Cemetery four miles from town, valued at 60 000, was burned Thursday night. A 50 foot shed guarding the site was set ablaze likely by a tramp. the monument collapsed ruined. Gov E D Morgan and family are in the vault beneath but unharmed. Work to finish by November.
August dispatches report China warning any repeat of the Kee Lung attack will be treated as a declaration of war. France orders Admiral Courbet to bombard Foo Chow arsenal inland on the Min river, amid cholera havoc in parts of France and Russia.
About fifty striking miners at Wood's Run were arrested and lodged in Odd Fellows hall in California PA in default of bail. The remaining campers relocated from Coal Center to land near Wood's Run. Quiet prevails but future developments are uncertain as funds are collected in Pittsburgh to sustain the Camp Missionaries.
In Sunkirty Pennsylvania August reports a fatal gas disaster at Buckridge Greenback mines. Eight men suffocated while attempting to bore a hole between workings to vent air. Names include William Carl Patrick Haley William Clark William Shankweller William Taylor George Beck Robert White and William Fox. Rescue attempts failed as gas also hampered other workers. Families wait anxious as officials plan to ventilate and recover bodies. The company faces heavy losses from the disaster and ongoing idle time.
