Growth of Tobacco Manufacture in the United States
The quarterly report of the National Bureau of Statistics shows rising tobacco use since 1872 with 1884 noting 3,457,300,017 cigars manufactured and over 85 million pounds of leaf used. Domestic consumption nearly doubles from 1872 to 1884 while imports stay small. Exports of American leaf range from 192 million to over 300 million pounds in various years, with total domestic leaf manufactured and exported exceeding 500 million pounds only in 1879 1883 and 1884. The report also estimates leaf-to-cigar ratios and predicts tobacco demand rising further in 1885 and 1886.

PRESENT CROP PROSPECTS AND WHEAT MARKETS
Winter wheat injury is reported as serious though conditions improved with warmth. Some regions see renewed wheat planting due to higher prices while others favor alternate crops. Western primary markets show week ending April 18 receipts around 1.58 million bushels, down from prior week, with Atlantic states and California holdings likely larger than usual. Europe and Australia are expected to export 40 to 50 million bushels, while France and Germany imports rise, implying European demand this year may be weak. Russians are trying to sell large quantities in Europe before possible war, though much is inferior quality.
