Ice Breaks Open on Lake During Warm Breaker Winds
A southerly breeze and warm weather widened the lake ice exposing a large opening where the winter fishermen camped. The crack stretches far into the lake, yielding a scenic but dangerous view as ice rots and may break up with an east wind. Only a few fishermen risk the unsafe ice, catching limited amounts, while others stay ashore. One fisherman, Helwig, learned ice rot firsthand after a bar slipped from his grip and disappeared into the lake.
