Monday afternoon near Croydon in Surrey a party of smugglers was pursued and overtaken by Mr RowLex riding officer with dragoons. Four carts carried over 18 cwt of tobacco, with loaded pistols carbines and powder balls. four smugglers arrested and committed for trial at the county gaol. A separate incident near Worthing saw 300 tubs of contraband spirits seized by Custom House crews, horses seized, and the vessel lading partly jettisoned to Shoreham. At Doncaster fair a masked sailor aroused soldiers by acting crippled, then challenged them before being taken to prison.
