Beaumont man to be tried for arson at Chelmsford gaol

Saturday fo nnight Samuel Smith of Beaumont was committed to Chelmsford gaol by clerk Matthew Thompson on the oath of John Dennis for feloniously setting fire to Mr Dennis's bean stack. The act occurred about eight in the evening, Smith fled to a public house and bragged of the fire. he was captured with the instruments, confessed, and later denied it. The beans stack and nearby structures were damaged despite neighbors' efforts. Smith remarked during confinement that rats fleeing the fire gave him amusement.
