Bathtub Blamed For Wine Problem By California Official
San Francisco September 23. Harry A. Caddow secretary of the Grape Growers league of California blames the bathtub for the wine industrys great problem. Nearly 25 million gallons of aged domestic wine now stored in American warehouses will not last many months after repeal of the eighteenth amendment. Caddow says dry years since 1918 doubled pre prohibition consumption. He notes US produced about 50 million gallons yearly before and imported 8 million. Since then demand rose to between 15 and 125 million gallons yearly. The bathtub is blamed. He estimates it may be five years before established wineries can distribute 100 million gallons annually of wine at least a year old.
