Watertown special report lists South Dakota American Legion department officer appointments for the coming year by Department Commander R M Henderson. Names include C B Gilbertson finance officer and Harold G Lee publicity director both of Watertown, H J Ballour rehabilitation officer of Sioux Falls, J H Shanard child welfare chairman of Bridgewater, plus athletic officer Paul Nozen, marksmanship man Howard C Curtis, and others from Pierre Vermilion Lead Brookings Deland Huron Mitchell Webster Aberdeen Harrisburg Edgemont and more as the 8 S. D. Legion committees fill key roles.
The Women's club resume meetings after adjournment with Mrs. Arthur Cahalan presenting a paper on world fairs. Verna O'Neil sang four pieces including That Fair Land. Tea followed, served by Mrs. Roy J. Miller and Mrs. arl Kindred, with blue and yellow decor and floral centerpieces.
Mrs. J. H. Kramer and Mrs. Earl Kindred entertained P. E. O. sisters at Miller on Monday. After the business meeting, Miss Poll Bushfield presented a paper titled The Century of Progress Exposition. Tea was served by the hostesses after the program.
Fifty young people attended a Christian Endeavor gathering in the parlors of the Pres byterian church on Monday evening. Frances Dwyer led the program of games and C. E. sponsors served lunch at the close with Mrs. L. T. Jarmouth Mrs. C. H. Fick and Mrs. J. C. Jones helping.
Desmet Kingsbury county hosts a two day teachers institute with 146 teachers enrolled. A F L Wray of Northern Normal leads the program with encouragement to maintain high standards amid discouragement. J W Kraushar and Miss Wilma Garrett also participate. H N Jones outlines three hot lunch plans, sparking interest among 55 rural teachers.
Rally day is scheduled for Sunday October 1 at 1039 gmock at the Wolsey Presbyterian church. The Missionary Society meets today at the church led by Mr W Rs. Ashby and Mrs. H. C. Cheney with hostesses Mesdames C. E B Fenner Albert Quiram C. Johnston W. R. Ashby and Frank Heitlen.
Dr. Barnast Orland Lawrence of Northern State Teachers College and UC faculty recipient of a Solvay Congress invitation in Brussels. He will present tatom experiment results, a distinction accorded to only one American physicist each congress, second to a Nobel Prize. He sails from the West Coast October 15, then visits London and Cambridge before returning.
A report by T L Orris says the agricultural adjustment administration approved a plan to mark retiring acres withdrawn from wheat production under adjustment contracts at no cost to farmers. Contracted acres representing a 15 percent reduction must be measured and marked, using stakes or posts at corners, to clearly show withdrawn areas for replacement crop practices and quick verification by wheat production control groups.
The St Lawrence Community church held its annual harvest home sale at W. J. Grabow's store on Saturday September 73. Despite tough times more than $100 was raised for the church with lunches served. Mr and Mrs Grabow donated their business space for the event, giving up their own business for the day.
Fe neral services were held at the Methodist church for Mrs Wes Jay Bucheltz 31 who died Friday night from eclampsia at her farm home southwest of Redfield She came to Redfield in 1929 from Dimeia She is survived by her husband a baby son two sisters Mrs Fred Tarks Mrs Williams of Redfield two brothers A J Sutter of Denver and Fred Sutter of Glendale Cal and her father who resides in Illinois
Mrs L S Cumming hosted a surprise dinner Friday night at her son's farm seven miles south of Broadland to celebrate Ross Cumming's birthday. Attendees included Miss Leah Cumming Ernest Jacobson of Huron Mrs W G Urban and daughter Dorothy Frances Poulisse and Mr and Mrs L S Cumming.
On September 2 1930 Tuesday October 10 set as the first rehearsal night for the Southern South Dakota Cooperative Musical societies in Yankton Dr L N Dailey director of the Yankton college conservatory of music leads the program All musically interested people within driving distance are invited to join A band orchestra and chorus will be formed from nearby towns Rehearsals will be held each Tuesday at Forbes hall Yankton college A concert by the combined groups is planned for spring following a winter rehearsal program

The St Lawrence Women’s Christian Temperance Union met with Mrs. F A Abbott and Mrs. Chester Reed of Miller. They received a report on the WCTU convention held in Brookings from Sept 1 to 10. A luncheon was served by Mrs. Abbott to close the session.
A large light tan owl found north of Hitchcock at the Eldeen home last week astonished residents. Described as the size of a hawk with a cream face edged in gold, it hisses at intruders and feeds only on mice.
Dr W D Schermerhorn former president of Dakota Wesleyan University. He publishes The Christian Mission in the Modern World a study on origins progress and problems of Christian missions. He lectures on church history and missions at Garrett Biblical Institute and recently toured the world with the American Society of Church History deputation.
Dr Aven Nelson head of Phi Kappa Phi will visit the Dakota Wesleyan University chapter on Wednesday. He will address the local student body and discuss the national honorary scholastic fraternity.
