Stock Poisoning Cases Reported in South Dakota
BROOKINGS Sept 28 Many cases of livestock deaths linked to feeding cane have been reported to South Dakota State college. Prussic acids develop under poor growing conditions and may be confined to certain stalks, making field testing via sampling unreliable. Chemists found no prussic acid in many stalk samples, yet fields may still be toxic. The recommended test is to introduce a few inferior animals first. if unharmed, cane is probably safe. Gradually increase grazing time. Historically, cane cut for fodder or siloed and dried is less apt to contain the acid.
