Pioneer Woman Rider of Dakota Rail Dies at Wayland
NB September 18 special report notes Mrs. Alice Noble a Wayland pioneer likely became the first passenger on a Dakota railroad when she and her husband rode a work train along the initial Sioux City to Elk Point stretch in 1872 before completion. The Nobles moved from Illinois to a Vermillion area homestead later settling in Wayland. Mrs. Noble was 17 at the time of her husband’s death about a year ago.
