Johnson to Keep His Job in Face of Charges
Seven charges were leveled against C. H. Johnson, South Dakota game director. Testimony described mileage claims, use of state cars, deer and pheasant handling, and a hatchery site purchase. Figures cited include a 350 mile Brookings trip, nine cent mileage rates totaling $31.50, and disputed cash payments to Saunders.
Mileage schemes in South Dakota game office probe
A South Dakota inquiry reveals improper mileage claims by state official QO. H. Johnson director of game and ash. He admitted charging nine cents per mile for trips including a Deadwood run and keeping 331.50 after paying less for parts of those trips. He suggested licenses to deer winners to Black Hills deputy Frank Patton, raising legal concerns. State officials condemn the graft as irregular and call for accountability. Securities Dept head B. W. Baer labeled multiple officials riding together and claiming mileage illegitimate. He notes only the vehicle owner may receive mileage.
