University Again to Aid Debaters at Vermillion

Vermillion September 18 The University of South Dakota Extension division will loan debating material to high school coaches at the cost of postage only The annual question is Resolved That the state should build and operate a hydroelectric plant on the Missouri river Materials come from hydro plants engineering surveys utilities and government agencies The service titled debating Service is highly valued Last year the division loaned 1000 packages containing 1 piece each to coaches in 137 communities.

Constitution Birthday Called 143 Years Old

Pierre, Sept 19. E C Giffen state superintendent urged observing Constitution Week in South Dakota schools. He noted Sept 17 marks the 142nd anniversary of the Constitution’s signing and suggested teachers use timely material to teach its history in classrooms. He explained the sequence from independence in 1776 to the 1787 signing and 1788 ratification.

Miller Hits Boom in Brick Building Growth

MILLEN Sept 13 Special Wilding activities to the amount of 100000 in brick constructions have been completed or are in progress in Miller. New brick stores include Ebner Templeman meat market Paul Peterson building Penny store and Vincent Pax building. Unfinished include W J Halvower building Presbyterian church and Joseph building replacing a burned frame structure. Miller claims brick construction this year will rival any northwest town of its size.

Mitchell Radio Show Set For November 1 and 2

Mitchell officials choose November 1 and 2 for the second annual radio show to be held at the Corn Palace. Local radio dealers meeting at the YWCA set plans aiming to outdo last year's program. Ten thousand tickets will be mailed to trade residents.

Sept 14 St Lawrence starts the first and second grades with Misa Jessia KHitigh ringing the bell for 23rd time. Two new teachers join the faculty Miss Nella Fry and Rosaenee Earth. High school enrollment about 970, grades 98, per Superintendent Wright.

Beet harvest in the Hills is set to begin next week across about 13,009 acres of sugar beet fields in the Belle Fourche Spearfish and Rapid City valleys. The sugar plant will open about a week later and run until early next year, expected to be one of the longest seasons on record.

Prisoner Rescue Charged Man Fined Fifty Dollars

Mitchell news item states Slagle pleaded guilty to rescuing a prisoner from a city petrol wagon and was fined 50 dollars. He was bound over to circuit court after a preliminary hearing. Testimony indicated he assaulted night policeman John Winnegar and took a man in the officer’s custody.

State Clubs Meet at Pierre Convention Highlights

South Dakota Federation of Women's Clubs plans its annual convention in Pierre set for October 1 to 4. Speakers include Grace Morrison Poole of Brockton Mass first vice president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, University of South Dakota president Herman G Games, Dakota Wesleyan president Earl A Ruadman, and J C Lindbergh of Northern Normal. Marionette club head Mrs C H Schwentker will present Alice in Wonderland with a home grounds beautification demo by A L Ford. Elections for officers to lead two years will be held.

Canova Hosts Meeting Of Congregational Churches

Tulare district reports Dwight Hansen, son of H C Hansen and brother of Ellis Hansen, was injured in a Utah automobile wreck while en route to McCloud California to visit a brother. Extent of injuries unknown. The car was wrecked.

Road conditions in Canova and vicinity are set to improve as village and state authorities approve graveling contracts. Work will begin soon, improving travel and safety for local residents and travelers.

Canova to Pierre bids will be opened September 18 for graveling the county road from Canova to Howard. Canova has had only one gravel outlet, a seven mile stretch built years ago through cooperation of nearby landowners.
