Highmore Farmer Demonstrates Drought Resistant Grass
Highmore, Sept. 12. After 18 years of trial, Harry Robinson near here has proven that crested wheat grass can be established and maintained through drought. He now farms about 140 acres of thriving grass providing hay and pasture, and harvested around 300 pounds of seed per acre this year. Hyde County agent Kenneth Wanless calls Robinson’s work valuable for showing how a drought resistant stand can be started, with seeding in September on a firm seedbed using five to six pounds per acre and rye stubble to harden the ground. Several neighbors including Fred Dittman and Frank Melbourn are now establishing stands for hay and pasture.
