A tornado near Salem last night caused extensive farm damage six miles south of town. Buildings were destroyed or wrecked on farms including Trede and McIntyre, with the storm disrupting telephone lines and causing heavy rainfall of 1.35 inches. No injuries were reported.
Widespread rainfall across the state boosts soil moisture after a late summer deluge. Huron received 0.60 inch as a prolonged shower, with many towns from Pierre to Canistota recording significant totals. The system, though late for crops, improves conditions for fall farming while unsettled skies and showers are forecast tonight and Friday.
LR Wiley was named general chairman of the Temmey for Attorney General Club at a local meeting. The group drew representatives from Huron and nearby communities as plans call for expanding statewide with an executive committee and sub committees to run the campaign. A booster meeting in Huron and county clubs nationwide are planned to boost Temmey's candidacy.
George Cardinal Mundelein arrived in New York to chant a pontifical mass for Patrick Cardinal Hayes, his boyhood schoolmate. At St. Patrick's Cathedral Hayes lay in state, with more than 60 religious orders taking part in the requiem. Police counted around 75,000 paying tribute, and tomorrow's pontifical mass was to admit only ticket holders.
In New York on September 8 Pi-Hilda the elephant, a Prospect Park Zoo favorite, fell into a pit after her mate Billy pushed her. Zoo director Captain R Cheyne Stout gave five days for veterinary help but doctors could not save her, and she was shot to end her suffering.
At Nurnberg the tenth Nazi congress heard Hans Frank declare marriage an act of the state with duties to build the nation. He praised state control of matrimony and predicted judgment for Dollfuss and Schuschnigg regime criminals, amid loud applause.
The 25 000 intercity truck drivers ratified a blanket wage and working conditions pact in Indianapolis. It sets 24 cents per mile and 75 cents per hour with a 60 hour week and covers Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa North and South Dakota and other states. The agreement ends strike threats though non signers may walk out.
The Solicitor General and Labor Department lawyer urged the high court to decide if membership in the Communist party justifies deportation in the Strecker case from Hot Springs Arkansas. President Perkins indicated awaiting a final ruling while Bridges case proceedings stall in federal courts.
Stranburg North Dakota area reports three Grant County post offices robbed last night. The La Bolt Farmers' elevator was looted with about $100 taken from a safe blown open. Sheriff Maurice Carlson investigates the Strandburg Albee and La Belt burglaries with federal authorities alerted.
San Francisco witnesses escalated labor tension as department stores and their 7,000 workers reinforce lines in a dispute over a union demanded register of clerks and a statewide seniority plan. The stores pledge to remain open while AFL and CIO backing strengthens the strike.
Florida high school student Gloria Smyley Miss Jacksonville advances to the talent finals among 44 contestants in the national beauty pageant. Two more finalists will be selected tonight and tomorrow, then all 46 compete for the Miss America title with results announced on Saturday night.
In Boston on September 8 0 percent widow Mary Sullivan 60 was set to perform a bag punching exhibition in her yard before a superior court master Peter Barre to decide if the noise meets the neighbors complaints. She contends the exercise eases arthritis and is not noisy though tenants say it sounds like a rip hammer and threaten to move. A temporary order already bars bag punching from 9 p m to 9 a m.
Defense counsel urged dismissal of conspiracy counts against James J. Hines a 61 year old Tammany district leader arguing he was merely one player not a mastermind in the 20 million dollar a year Dutch Schultz policy racket. Stryker asked Justice Ferdinand Pucora to throw out the 13 counts in a 27 page brief while the state rested yesterday.
Robert M. Rownd, 94, of Ripley, Ohio, won the post of commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic with 90 votes, defeating Henry Held, 92, of West Allis, Wisconsin, who received 12. Frank L. Quade of Dubuque was elected senior vice commander, J. W. Carroll of Lisbon was chosen junior vice commander in chief, and A. B. Garrett of Gallipolis was named surgeon general.
Lester Thomas, Milbank truck driver, remains under physician care in hospital with a first degree manslaughter charge anticipated after a head on collision near De Smet last Saturday. Mrs. Howard Burton died at a Huron hospital. her husband and six year old Mary Jean Burton were badly hurt. A warrant for Thomas’ arrest was issued and arraignment is expected after he is released from hospital and placed in custody.
The eighth annual dinner for South Dakota sportsmen and conservationists will be Sept 14 at 6 PM on the Mezzanine floor of the Myvin Hughitt Hotel. Sponsored by the South Dakota division, Huron Izaak Walton League, and state game and fish commission, tickets are available in advance at the fairgrounds building and are open to all sportsmen and conservationists. Dr E Waggoner of Sioux Falls will preside over a program of short talks by prominent sportsmen. Also noted is a quiet wedding in Maid Marian head register office for Warwick and Wiske.
