Cities Press Militant Tax Reform For South Dakota Towns

Pierre reports Rapid City official A S Holm urged the League of South Dakota Municipalities to take a militant stand to win more tax revenue. Crop experts cut estimates of U S 1940 corn harvest

Crop experts lowered their estimates of the United States corn harvest for 1940 due to August deterioration. The average of six Sept 1 estimates shows 2.256 billion bushels, down from 2.619 billion last year, with spring wheat at 216 million bu and Canadian prairie crops pegged at 501 million and 315 million bushels.

Home For Aged Is Named In Law Suit

In Beresford the Bethesda home for the aged operated by the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America was defendant in a suit by Lois Hagen Hudson seeking 5611 dollars. Hagen claimed a life care contract began January 1 1928 and that he conveyed his Norway Township property on April 20 this year in return for ongoing services. The complaint seeks the difference between property value and services rendered.

Rural Teachers In Hand County Meet

Eighty five rural school teachers from Hand County gathered at the courthouse for a pre-school meeting. Hazel V. Peterson of Pierre spoke on elementary instructions, with Ruth Lewellyn describing the health program and M W Wiseman covering Junior Red Cross work. County Superintendent Winifred Lorentson outlined plans, and supplies were distributed to attendees.

Tulare High School enrolls fifty one students

Tulare September 5 special report states fifty-one high school students registered last Monday at the opening of the Tulare school. Several more are expected to enroll later, with total attendance slightly below last year. Fifty-three pupils are enrolled in the grade school, as faculty lists name Supt. Iron Lung Rushed To Sioux Falls

Two new infantile paralysis cases arrive in Sioux Falls with the use of iron lungs. Darrene Stockwell, 15, from a farm 50 miles away, is placed in the city’s sole iron lung, Hazel Jackson moves out after first night outside a lung since May 24 arrival from Aberdeen. Donald Schlagel, five, son of Mr and Mrs Byron Schlagel, shows good outlook after serum treatment.

Four new faculty members joined Harrold school as classes began September 3. Man With Job Is Fined For Drawing Jobless Benefits
