Snow fell early yesterday in Huron with about two inches measured by the weather bureau. The temperature dipped to 20 degrees around 8 am, rising to 32 by noon. Birds perished due to the cold, with officials noting a likely species similar to the long spur.
Wheat prices fell to new record lows amid Liverpool bearishness with December contracts sliding to 3-4 cents and later to 4 3 8 cents a bushel. Advices from Liverpool indicated US dispatches were discouraging and buyers withdrew as Chicago sellers faced muted demand. December wheat also touched 45 1/2 cents at Winnipeg.
London report says a German mail freighter that departed Croydon in a gale over the English Channel Saturday is considered lost. The German pilot and mechanic were aboard when it left Croydon Airdrome, and high seas are blamed for the disappearance.
Weather forecast for Huron and vicinity notes fair and continued cold tonight with increasing cloudiness, warmer by Tuesday. In South Dakota the west portion remains unsettled and not as cold, with partly warmer conditions extending to the east and south regions.
In Cheyenne Wyoming on October 3 a two man party remained missing after a blizzard in the Big Horn mountains. Rescue teams free through deep snow found one body, Dillon McKinnon of Greybull. Fred Deminel and Dell F Yoakum with McKinnon were not yet located. Mrs Russell Huddleston of Billings reported her brother Everett Carnell and Arthur Rogers also missing with a third man unnamed as they hoped to return October 1.
Two elderly pilots known as the flying grandmothers continued their Hoover campaign after their plane cracked in a forced landing near Chicago. Slightly injured but undeterred, Mrs H Foster Bain 58 and Mrs Samuel Dolbear 50 planned to press to Iowa City in a commercial aircraft. The ship damaged in a weed-filled ditch after a forest preserve touch down, both wings broken and fuselage damaged. Mrs Bain, licensed pilot since 1930, kept a steady attitude about the incident.
American consul reports unconfirmed but likely account of Lutheran missionary Bert Nelson of Minneapolis killed by bandits after nearly two years as prisoner. Chinese refugees say he was slain two months earlier as bandits fled advancing forces. Nelson kidnapped Oct 5, 1930, in Kwangshan Henan province after captors demanded 100,000 in gold.
Chancellor Von Papen advances fusion of Prussian state with the federal government appointing Edler Von Brawn to run the Prussian agriculture ministry and Prof. Popitz to head the Prussian treasury ministry, with Prof. Kaehbler assigned to education. President Von Hindenburg names Popitz and Hans Bracht as federal ministers without portfolio.
Democratic candidate U S senator Cherry spoke in Beadle County and Republican leaders announced a six city campaign plan through Huron Wolsey Wessington Hitchcock Daum auditorium. Governor Norbeck and others planned rallies to finish the election push with speeches in multiple towns.
Senator George W Norris of Nebraska endorses Senator Norbeck for re election in South Dakota. He says Norbeck is a leader in farm relief and insists his defeat would be a step backward harming farmers. The telegram was read at Norbeck’s campaign offices in Redfield.
G E Brownell about 33 of De Smet was killed and Ed O Connor 48 of Akron Ohio severely injured when their auto left the road on a downhill curve near McIntosh Sunday evening Brownell was pinned under the wreck and died at the scene O Connor said he jumped from the car before the crash Brownell had a wife and a son Robert a pupil at St Anne s school Humboldt survives the family and his three years residence in De Smet were noted He had worked on highway projects in the area.
Vermillion grand master W A Bauman will attend the district L O O F meeting in Huron Tuesday afternoon at the lodge hall. A 6 30 dinner for Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and families is planned, followed by a Rebekah session and an open meeting for all.
Dr John M Flude of Hollywood California spoke at a gathering of the state board of health and State Medical Society representatives about a cancer control program for South Dakota. Attending were Dr A E Bostrom Waubay Dr J R Westaby Madison Dr F J D Cook Langford and Dr J B Whiteside Aberdeen among others. Flude a field rep for the American Society for the Control of Cancer planned to depart from there.
Edwin Neubarth an 18 year old from Virgil Jooy suffered the loss of his left arm below the elbow after a gun exploded while he rode a wagon Saturday. He was brought to Huron hospital and his physician reports his condition satisfactory.
About a thousand Chicago police concentrated in the Loop as three unemployed organizations prepared to parade. Officers issued cautions on inflammatory insignia and banners while protesters planned to carry signs they prefer.
President Hoover attacks Democratic leadership en route to New York. He accuses Democrats of seeking reciprocal tariffs and warns Maryland to remain vigilant on tariffs. He cites greenback currency proposals and criticizes party spendthrift policies while outlining his campaign travel plan and expected New York speech preparations.
The Elks lodge and The Evening Huronite prepared a joint election returns party for November 8 in the Elks hall. Returns from South Dakota and nationwide would be announced via telephone for those unable to attend, with the hall kept open until after midnight.
Norman Thomas, socialist candidate for president, shifted the Connecticut leg of his campaign to his lieutenants after three speeches in his second fall tour. In Bridgeport he warned that the democratic bandwagon would carry capitalism for four years, a sentiment echoed after stops in New Haven and Hartford.

In Muskogee Oklahoma on October 31 a court heard a motion seeking a life term for Rev. Berrie after a jury found him guilty of a related charge. The proceedings focus on the minister and the implications of the verdict.
