Department of Highways Loses Engineers to Booming Centers

Defense demand and higher living costs pull South Dakota engineers from the Department of Highways. About 35 resident engineers left for defense work, with only three graduating engineers joining the department last June. Pay boosts of 10 to 15 dollars monthly attempted to meet market rates, but many chose higher federal or private sector pay. A wage study underway aims to set uniform scales for the 1943 legislature.
